Transformation of viaduct arches to create improved artists facilities

Project Artworks is an internationally renowned collective of neuro diverse artists. Sophisticated in their understanding of complex support needs and recognising people as individuals, they work with a diverse client and user group. We have welcomed the opportunity to respond to their nuanced spatial requirements in the upgrade and refurbishment of their existing studios housed within the large brick arch of an elaborate Edwardian road bridge.

The project sought to both rationalise the space and to enhance the existing phenomenology, to create truly fit for purpose, accessible spaces. The space and historic character of the arches presented complex constraints but rewarding spatial opportunities.

A balance is maintained between careful, economic specification, sensitive design, and the specification of products and materials which minimise environmental impact and maximise thermal performance. the improvements deliver full accessibility, new spatial legibility and improved building performance whilst enhancing the existing spatial character and remarkable existing structure
