Adams & Sutherland worked with Kingsgate Workshops Trust for some years on adjustments to their building and masterplanning for future funding opportunities and growth. Partial acquisition of funds allowed the Trust to proceed with this stand-alone phase of work for an education and exhibition space.

The design took a tactical response to the tiny budget and awkward constraints of the site, working within the boundaries of the yard, and deploying low-cost efficient building products; a sustainable and prefabricated timber construction and fibre-cement cladding.

An appropriate dialogue between the new building and the existing place is made by contrasting the exterior’s industrial quality and the calm, top-lit interior, with windows framing particular views. Good natural lighting, breathable timber walls and underfloor heating provide a comfortable working and teaching environment.
