Elizabeth Adams Director
Liz studied at the Architectural Association. She worked for a number of London practices, before setting up in practice with Graeme Sutherland and formally establishing Adams and Sutherland in 2001.
Liz combined practice with academic work, teaching at the Architectural Association, and as visiting lecturer at London Metropolitan and Brighton University and continued to be involved with academic life through lecturing, and acting as an external examiner, most recently at Westminster University and previously at the AA and universities of Brighton and East London. She continues to have a regular role as part 3 examiner at the AA.
From her wide experience in delivering public projects, both buildings and landscapes she has developed a sensitive approach to matching the requirements of public sector clients alongside the needs of project users. She has acted as lead director on the practice's building projects including Chandos community centre, Lowlands performance space and landscape, Kyle of Sutherland Community Hub, Poplar Works and West Ham United Foundation building.
In addition to leading on several of our community buildings, she has been responsible for renovations and extensions of Grade II Listed buildings in and around London and has completed the RIBA conservation registration course.
In her capacity as a design advisor to the GLA for 7 years, Liz worked closely with Design for London and the GLA on urban strategies and public spaces. She has since acted as a design advisor to the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
She has recently acted as expert witness on townscape, urban design, and architectural quality, acting for LB of Southwark in their successful case against a large proposal at London Bridge. She gave evidence for the GLA’s successful refusal of permission for the proposed Tulip in the City of London, and before that acted for RB of Greenwich in a large planning inquiry, which was also successful for the borough.
