Evergreen Adventure Playground

Location: Hackney, London
Client: Evergreen Play Association
Date: Phased Completion 1998 - 2001

This project was an opportunity to re-evaluate the traditional adventure playground, and develop a place for children that would inspire creative play and evolve over time whilst providing integrated access for children with disabilities.

A limited budget required phased development. Firstly the ground was re-formed into a ‘landscape of play’, and then, having seen children use this new ground, a series of structures were installed to form a circuitous and three-dimensional journey of play.

The final phase made improvements to the existing play building. Strengthening the lengthy evolution of this project was a positive collaboration between the design team, play workers and the children. The playground has become a model of play provision, is hugely popular and well used by children with special needs.
