Pump Corner Mixed-Use Development

Location: Dorking

Client: Private Developer

Date: Completed 1995

A three storey, timber framed Grade Two listed building in Dorking town centre. Ad-hoc alterations and additions had obscured the original historic building, and the interior was underused.

Characteristic of local typology, a narrow passageway leads to a hidden courtyard. The courtyard became a light-filled shared space with a generous steel and timber staircase lifting the space up to the sunlight and shared entrance. A new double height space leads to four apartments. The interior spaces were worked carefully around a 500 year old timber frame.
