Wick Lane Link

Location: Victoria Park, East London
Client: ODA / London Borough of Newham
Date: Completed 2011

Our appointment as sub-consultants was to support the Olympic Delivery Authority in discharging a planning obligation for the delivery of an enhanced pedestrian and cyclist between Victoria Park and the Greenway. The short journey is currently characterised by a confusing and poor quality urban realm, dominated by road traffic and lacking in a recognisable coherence or positive identity.

There are two strands of proposal: generic ideas which take elements from the Greenway ‘vocabulary’ into and along Wick Lane to introduce a continuity along the route, and specific spatial proposals which work with and amplify or transform existing spaces to create a specific sense of place.

The generic ideas consist of proposals for new ground surfaces, pedestrian road crossings, wayfinding proposals and a series of greening projects. The specific projects respond to the four key spatial moments of the route: the approach to Victoria Park, the Hertford Union Canal crossing, the A12 undercroft and the uphill approach to the entrance to the Greenway.
