London 2012 Olympic Greenway

Location: East London
Client: Olympic Development Agency
Date: Under construction 2010

The Greenway is a linear park located along the elevated embankment of the celebrated Northern Outfall Sewer, introduced by the great Victorian engineer Bazalgette to tackle the problem of cholera in London in the 19th century. It stretches from Victoria Park in Hackney to the Thames at Beckton. We were selected from 70 submissions in open competition to undertake the London 2012 project which regenerates a 3km length of this extraordinary place to create a special and permanent green link and a key public pedestrian route into the Olympic Park.

A series of straight ‘engineered’ paths, inlaid with reclaimed materials, connect to each other at bridges to create a new series of spaces, and act as a reminder of the hidden construction beneath.

‘The reinvigoration of the Greenway is yet another example of the legacy provided by the Games. It will benefit a great many people, helping to create a fantastic green route to be used and enjoyed by walkers and cyclists for decades to come’

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson
