King George V DLR Station

Location: North Woolwich, London

Client: London Borough of Newham

Date: 2006

These environmental improvements at the new DLR station approach in North Woolwich are part of a wider TfL-funded programme, addressing the interface between new stations and existing communities. New granite and concrete paving form both a new urban space and a shared surface for pedestrians and residents' parking.

The entry to the station is marked by a distinctive blue brick 'mat',and the principal pedestrian route from local shops, and Woolwich ferry is strengthened and marked by signage.

We were interested in the way that the large scale DLR infrastructure has replaced the monumental ships that once docked at the ends of these small residential streets, and in maintaining this curious juxtaposition of scale.
