Margaret Macmillan Children's Centre

Location: Islington, London
Client: CEA Islington
Date: Completed 2007

Prior to the works Margaret Macmillan Nursery occupied two twentieth century buildings spread across a split level site. This project for a new children’s centre refurbished, extended and connected the existing buildings to create a sequence of calm and inclusive spaces, suitable for all children.

The new timber building brings a reformed clarity to the route through the school and to the site and, in addition to the differing values represented by the original nursery buildings, heralds contemporary preoccupations of sustainability, economy of means and clarity of materials.

The nursery is located within a glorious garden and the careful positioning of windows and rooflights bring the outdoors deep into the interior.
