Migrants Resource Centre

Location: Pimlico, London
Client: Migrants Resource Centre
Date: Phased Completion 2003-05

The Migrants Resource Centre provides support facilities for people new to Britain. This sessional crèche was one of a sequence of projects to upgrade and make accessible their existing Victorian building. New pavement lights bringing daylight into the refurbished basement animate the space: the shadows of passers-by and the passage of sunlight making aural and visual connection to the life of the street above.

‘A child’s world  - this cosy space has immediate appeal. It is welcoming, bright and fun. It is a clever interior because it is so small and yet it has an element of discovery and surprise. To move through and enjoy the play of light from the pavement above is great fun, and the underground rooms, catacomb like, are tremendously cosy’
