Paul is a young adult with complex needs who is cared for at home. He needs assistance to negotiate thresholds and differing ground conditions, and in all matters of personal care. Through his tendency to rock and jump, he can apply considerable strength and movement to fixtures and fittings.

The bathroom is an extension to the existing house connecting directly to a ground floor bedroom and allowing direct access to the yard. Access to the experiences of different weather conditions and good quality of light were priorities. A large rooflight provides views of the sky and the sound of rain, and high light levels with no loss of privacy.

A number of commonly used standard specification items were unsuitable to Paul's particular physical and cognitive needs. A wet room took the place of a less robust or accessible shower cubicle and standard slip-resistant flooring was replaced by anti-slip tiles for genuine safety. The detailed dimensions between objects was carefully planned to allow easy access for Paul plus his carer.
