Wellington Bridge

Location: Tower Hamlets, East London

Client: London Borough of Tower Hamlets
Date: 1998

The Wellington Estate in Tower Hamlets has little open space for children but lies adjacent to the Regents Canal, which divides it from Victoria Park.

An initial stage of consultation was carried out in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation Roadshow. We worked with local schools and residents to develop proposals for a new footbridge, which would provide easy access to the beautiful green spaces and facilities of the park.

Our proposals emphasise the bridge as part of a longer journey - a smaller scale experience before the large open space of Victoria Park - and create a series of new open spaces within the estate and new views to the park.  The proposed bridge is a stressed ribbon construction with minimal visible components.
