architecture landscape urban design

Dene Street

Location: Dorking, Surrey
Client: Carrington 1953 Ltd
Date: Completed 2001

Three apartments and a shop unit were created in a Grade II listed town centre building, making use of the existing eccentric configuration of spaces and a new single-storey extension. Each home includes private external space arranged around a shared courtyard and natural light is brought into all parts of the deep plan.

‘Dorking is commuter country, a town caught in the knuckles of Surrey’s North Downs. And just as the hills pen in the urban spread, so the existing fabric of historic buildings tends to define new architecture in the area. Adams & Sutherland has made this limitation a virtue with a retail/residential project that manages to defer to the context while rethinking it with a soft poetry of its own’
